PROJECT DETAILS

The increased utilization of copper scarps with recent developments and construction activities in Doha. Most of the scrap is now being exported and raw material required by different factories like cable fabricators are being imported. The proposed production facility implementation would facilitate these companies with the raw material and meets the present demand.

The principal pollutant emitted from secondary copper smelting activities is particulate matter. Similarly, drying of chips and borings to remove excess oils and cutting fluids cause discharges of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and products of incomplete combustion. Fugitive emissions occur from each process associated with secondary copper smelter operations. Several air emission sources have been identified for manufacturing operations.

A refined modelling analysis has been conducted using AERMOD. The dispersion modelling for this project has been conducted in a manner that utilizes the worst-case operating conditions associated with the ambient temperature range in an effort to predict the highest impact for each averaging period. Model runs were conducted for the proposed plant`s air pollutant sources alone. Emissions associated with the plant facility are not expected to contribute any major to concentrations at any sensitive populated receptors and respective Best Available Techniques (BAT) has been recommended such as Dust extraction for Granulator, Fume Treatment system for emissions from Rotary Furnace, High Efficiency Dust Removal (Bag House + Wet Scrubber), Ventilation of working areas, Acid Demisting system for Electro-refining section.

The project scope comprises of carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment for this facility. Century Copper had approached Qatar Design Consortium to carry out the scope of work (SoW) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study and to prepare the report submitted to the MME and to obtain Environmental Approval from MME.A structured and detailed survey including walk over survey, sampling analysis were performed which includes critical environmental components like ambient air quality, ground water, soil and noise within study area.
