PROJECT DETAILS
Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) was established in 1965, to produce and meet the demand of cement in the State of Qatar. The QNCC has established four plants for manufacturing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Sulphate Resistant Cement (SRC). The total production capacity of the plant will be 16000 TPD clinker for the new development.
QNCC engaged the services of Qatar Design Consortium for carrying out the EIA for this project. Scope of Work (SoW) and (ToR) for EIA study to be carried out as a part of environmental appraisal process.
The expansion of this plant is expected to have positive impacts by way of selecting more recent technology at the plant and process equipment, pollution control system and monitoring devices. To fulfill this increasing demand and to avoid import of cement, the QNCC has decided to set up a new line (plant no. 5) of capacity 5000 TPD at the existing project site.
The major environmental impact from the operation of cement plants is due to dust emissions from different stacks and fugitive emissions from various sections of product handling and appropriate control devices are installed. Various recommendations for environmental management during construction of plant 5 facilities and operational environmental requirements for plant 2 to 4 along with the new unit.
The environmental evaluation included the construction and operation phase activities and impacts on the environmental component. Required mitigation and management practices have been formulated as a part of the study along with the monitoring and reporting criteria for the project.
Scope included carrying out baseline environmental studies for meteorological monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring, noise monitoring, Plant area monitoring for stack emissions & fugitive emissions, groundwater monitoring, soil quality monitoring, marine water quality monitoring (Intake and Discharge Points), Sewage Treatment Plant water analysis and air dispersion modelling. Along with Preparation of Environmental Monitoring Plan for both Construction and Operation phase.
