PROJECT DETAILS

The Qatar Aluminium Extrusion Company (QALEX) is the first aluminium extrusion company in Qatar with an existing capacity of 8000 MT/year. The management of QALEX proposes to expand their existing capacity based on the increasing demand for aluminium components, to be used in many domestic, commercial and industrial applications. In line with major infrastructural developments in Qatar, the demand for processed Aluminium components has increased many folds in the recent years.

To meet the increasing demand and to develop in-house production and processing facilities, such as anodizing and powder coating, the QALEX management has proposed to expand their existing production and to include within their existing premises, a new press line, a new anodizing line and a new vertical powder coating line that would replace the existing horizontal powder coating line. The aluminium profiles from extrusion press are sent to the anodizing line, to the powder coating line or directly sent to packaging section. As per the requirement, aluminium profiles from external sources would also be anodized or powder coated. All the proposed process lines that are to be added would be within the existing plot area, which has been approved for such types of industrial activities.

The list of changes which are part of the proposed expansion have been briefly stated in the points below:

a) A new 7” extrusion press line that is capable of processing aluminium billets of 7 inches in diameter would be installed. This would facilitate the production of additional conveniently sized and shaped aluminium profiles. The new press line is proposed to be installed adjacent and parallel to the existing press line.
b) A new anodizing line is to be added adjacent and parallel to the new proposed press line, which would be utilized to anodize required aluminium profiles extruded at the extrusion press lines.
c) A new vertical powder coating line would replace the existing horizontal powder coating line to achieve higher production rate.

The project scope comprises of carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment for this facility. QALEX had approached Qatar Design Consortium to carry out the scope of work (SoW) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study and to prepare the report submitted to the MME and to obtain Environmental Approval from MME.A structured and detailed survey including walk over survey, sampling analysis were performed which includes critical environmental components like ambient air quality, ground water, soil and noise within study area.
